The job consists of the day-to-day management, monitoring and change implementation for the server, storage, network and environmental systems in a production Datacenter environment including adding, changing, documenting, monitoring and removing systems per customer’s requests while maintaining established processes and procedures.


  • Maintain the Waterloo Datacenter in optimum condition to facilitate the high availability we expect from the Datacenter, and that we need for hosting managed services
  • Perform change in a controlled and documented way
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and tests on the Datacenter systems
  • Co-operate within the international Datacenter and Network virtual teams
  • Assist local ICS staff with Regional Server Room/IT Closet maintenance and suggest & implement improvements
  • Maintain the Regional monitoring (check_mk) and equipment inventory (openDCIM) systems and assist other ICS staff with use as needed.
  • Co-operate with our Healthcare and Graphics Business Unit customers to improve the services offered


  • Technical certification BA/BS or equivalent experience


  • 3+ years’ experience installing and supporting one or more of: servers, network switches, storage arrays, environmental hardware.
  • 1+ years’ experience with Datacenter operations and maintenance including racking, break/fix, cabling, and proper labelling of systems and cables.
  • Experience deploying and supporting computers in a production environment
  • Experience supporting production systems and services in a 24/7 environment.
  • Experience with Incident Management, IT Inventory and Monitoring systems

Specific skills:

  • Strong verbal, written, and analytical skills and the ability to communicate and interact with all members of projects.
  • Familiarity with ITIL practices
  • Strong understanding and experience with networking concepts and protocols such as DNS, DHCP, NTP, VLANs and Trunks, Fiber Channel over Ethernet, Fiber Channel
  • Time management skills for prioritizing tasks and projects for multiple customers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven organizational skills and ‘attention to detail’ are essential
  • Ability to diagnose and repair server and network hardware issues in a production environment with as little downtime as possible
  • Ability to maintain (in an organized way) the inventory and monitoring systems used to track our production systems across the Region
  • Ability to identify and implement improvements to Datacenter systems which will reduce risk of failures
  • Ability to work with and support both ‘legacy’ systems as well as current technology
  • Familiarity or Experience with HPe Servers an asset
  • Familiarity or Experience with HPe and/or EMC Storage arrays an asset
  • Familiarity or Experience with Cisco Catalyst and Nexus switches an asset

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 27kg (50lbs)
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, crouch, and/or kneel
  • Ability to work in an air conditioned and loud Data Center environment for extended periods (using appropriate hearing protection)
